In a thrilling culmination to the 2024 PGA Championship, Xander Schauffele finally seized his first major title, fending off a spirited challenge from Bryson DeChambeau. The 30-year-old Californian golfer, who had been delivering impressive performances without a major trophy to show for it, made history at Valhalla Golf Club.
Schauffele's journey to victory was marked by a record-breaking performance in the first round, where he scored a 9-under 62, the lowest round in PGA Championship history. He also matched the PGA record for the largest margin after 18 holes with a three-shot lead. Despite his commanding lead, Schauffele maintained a level-headed perspective. “It's just one day,” he said. “Very happy with how I played. I can't think much more of it. I have to tee it up tomorrow.”
His performance was not without challenges. In the final round, DeChambeau made a significant push, sinking a long birdie putt on the 18th hole to tie the lead. However, Schauffele, with a birdie putt of his own on the final hole, secured his victory. The win was a testament to Schauffele's resilience and consistency, as he had come close to winning on several occasions.
The victory also came with a substantial financial reward. The 2024 PGA Championship purse had increased to a total of $18.5 million, with Schauffele taking home a hefty $3.33 million for his win. The runner-up, DeChambeau, received $1.99 million, while third place Viktor Hovland earned $1.26 million.
Schauffele's win at the PGA Championship marks a significant milestone in his career, ending a trophy drought since the summer of 2022. Despite several close calls, he remained optimistic. “I've just been playing some really solid golf,” he said. “Been having close calls. My team and I, we just say let's keep chugging along.”
