In an unprecedented move, the University of Southern California (USC) has barred its valedictorian, Asna Tabassum, from delivering her commencement speech due to allegations of antisemitism and ensuing safety concerns. The decision has sparked a heated debate on the limits of free speech and the role of universities in navigating contentious political issues.
Tabassum, a Muslim American biomedical engineering major from Chino Hills, California, has been accused of making antisemitic posts on social media, including calls for the "complete abolition" of Israel. The controversy arose after she publicly questioned the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict and shared links that critics claim promote antisemitism.
In a letter to the USC community, Provost Andrew Guzman explained the decision, stating, "While this is disappointing, tradition must give way to safety." He emphasized that the decision was not about curtailing freedom of speech but about maintaining campus security.
However, Tabassum and her supporters have criticized the university's decision, suggesting that it is a form of censorship. In a statement, Tabassum expressed her shock and disappointment, stating, "I am both shocked by this decision and profoundly disappointed that the university is succumbing to a campaign of hate meant to silence my voice."
The Council on American-Islamic Relations-Los Angeles (CAIR-LA) has also condemned USC's decision, calling it "cowardly" and "disingenuous." Hussam Ayloush, executive director of CAIR-LA, said, "The dishonest and defamatory attacks on Asna are nothing more than thinly-veiled manifestations of Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism."
Despite the controversy, USC maintains that its decision was necessary to ensure the safety of its students and the campus community. The university has reportedly received threats via email, letters, and phone calls, which have escalated to the point of creating substantial risks relating to security and disruption at commencement.
