In an unusual discovery, contractors working on a Michigan grocery store rooftop found a 34-year-old homeless woman living inside the store's sign. The woman had managed to create a makeshift home within the sign, complete with a computer, printer, and coffee maker.
The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, was found on April 23rd living inside the sign of the Family Fare store in Midland, Michigan. The sign, estimated to be about 5 feet wide and 8 feet high, had a door and was accessible from the roof. "She was homeless," said Officer Brennon Warren of the Midland Police Department. "It's a story that makes you scratch your head, just somebody living up in a sign."
The woman had been living in the sign for approximately a year, according to her statement to the police. She had a job elsewhere but had made the sign her home. The sign was equipped with flooring, a mini desk, clothing, a Keurig coffee maker, a printer, and a computer. The woman managed to get electricity through a power cord plugged into an outlet on the roof.
The discovery was made when contractors noticed an extension cord on the roof. The woman's access to the rooftop remains a mystery as there was no ladder in sight. "I honestly don't know how she was getting up there. She didn't indicate, either," said Officer Warren.
The parent company of Family Fare, SpartanNash, responded to the situation with compassion and professionalism. "Ensuring there is ample safe, affordable housing continues to be a widespread issue nationwide that our community needs to partner in solving," said Adrienne Chance, a spokesperson for SpartanNash.
The woman was cooperative and agreed to leave without any charges being pursued. Local police provided her with information about services in the area. "She apologized and continued on her way. Where she went from there, I don't know," said Officer Warren.
