In a tale that has captured international attention, Shug, a female zebra, has been safely corralled after a six-day escapade in the Washington wilderness. The zebra's adventure began on April 28 when she, along with three other zebras, escaped from a trailer near North Bend, Washington, about 30 miles east of Seattle.
The zebras were being transported from Winlock, Washington, to Anaconda, Montana, when an issue with the trailer prompted the owner to pull over on Interstate 90. Seizing the opportunity, the zebras made a dash for freedom. While the other three zebras were recaptured within hours, Shug had other plans.
The mare embarked on a journey through the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range, "occasionally being spotted by residents and causing international sensation," according to Regional Animal Services of King County. Shug's escapade became a viral sensation, with sightings of her sparking a flurry of photos and videos on the internet.
The search for Shug came to a close on Friday when a group of private citizens and animal control officers from Regional Animal Services of King County located her in the woods in the Riverbend neighborhood. The farmer who found Shug managed to gain her trust by offering her food and fencing off the area, according to FOX 13 Seattle.
Despite her nearly week-long adventure, Shug was found to be in good condition. "The zebra seemed to be in good condition despite her nearly week-long adventure in the woods," Regional Animal Services of King County said.
