Lexi Thompson, a luminary in the world of women's professional golf, has announced her decision to retire from full-time competition on the LPGA Tour after the 2024 season. Thompson, 29, has been a prominent figure in the sport for the past 15 years, earning a reputation as one of the most accomplished golfers of her generation.
In a heartfelt message posted on Instagram, Thompson shared her decision, stating, "While it is never easy to say goodbye, it is indeed time. At the end of 2024, I will be stepping away from a full professional golf schedule." She expressed her eagerness to spend more time with her family, friends, and her trusted companion, Leo, while also continuing to contribute to the sport and inspire future generations of golfers.
Thompson's illustrious career includes 15 worldwide wins, 11 of which were on the LPGA Tour. Her most notable victory was at the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship, her only major title. Thompson, a two-time Olympian and six-time Solheim Cup competitor, was once the youngest golfer to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open at the age of 12 in 2007, and she turned pro at 15 in 2010.
Despite her success, Thompson has faced her share of challenges. She spoke candidly about the mental health struggles that come with the pressures of professional golf. "Although this has been an amazing journey, it hasn't always been an easy one," Thompson said in her video. "Since I was 12, as a golfer, my life has been a whirlwind of constant attention, scrutiny, and pressure."
Thompson's decision to step back from full-time competition has been met with surprise and support from her peers. Fellow LPGA star Nelly Korda praised Thompson's dedication to the sport and her efforts to grow the game, saying, "She's had such an amazing career. It's sad to see that she's obviously leaving and not going to be out here with us anymore, but she's had an amazing career, and I wish her the best in this new chapter of her life."
LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan also expressed her gratitude for Thompson's contributions to the sport, stating, "Lexi's impact extends far beyond the golf course. She embodies the spirit and dedication of our founders -- always showing up and engaging intentionally to help further the growth and impact of the LPGA."
