Kevin Spacey Refutes New Allegations in Upcoming Documentary, Asserts Innocence

Date:

In a recent online interview, Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey has vehemently denied fresh allegations of sexual harassment and assault that are set to be aired in a forthcoming British documentary. The actor, known for his roles in "The Usual Suspects" and "American Beauty," defended his innocence and expressed his struggle to return to work following his acquittal of criminal charges in a London court last year.

"I've got nothing left to hide," Spacey declared in the interview with former U.K. journalist Dan Wootton, titled "Kevin Spacey: Right of Reply." The actor insisted he has never engaged in illegal activities and expressed his frustration at the continuous allegations. "I can't go through this again, allowing myself to be baselessly attacked without defending myself," he stated.

The documentary, "Spacey Unmasked," is scheduled to air on May 6 and 7 on Channel 4 in Britain and will be streamed on Max in the U.S. It is reported to feature testimonies from men regarding incidents that occurred between 1976 and 2013. Spacey, however, remains steadfast in his denial of these allegations.

"I take full responsibility for my past behavior and my actions, but I cannot and will not take responsibility or apologize to anyone who's made up stuff about me or exaggerated stories about me," Spacey asserted. He further denied ever promising career advancement in exchange for sexual favors.

Spacey, who served as the artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre in London from 2004 to 2015, admitted to being a "flirt" with men in their 20s and occasionally making "clumsy" passes. However, he maintained that any relationships with these men were not part of a calculated plan on his part to advance their careers.

The actor also expressed his discontent with Channel 4, claiming that he had "repeatedly requested" more than seven days to respond to the allegations made in their documentary. According to Spacey, the broadcaster refused, asserting that a seven-day response period to new, anonymized, and non-specific allegations was a 'fair opportunity' for him to refute any claims made against him.

Spacey's career has been significantly impacted since the first allegations of inappropriate behavior surfaced in 2017, at the onset of the #MeToo movement. He lost his lead role as Frank Underwood in the popular Netflix drama "House of Cards," and described his struggle to return to work after being acquitted of all criminal charges as a "life sentence."
