"Hardest Geezer" Triumphs: British Man Achieves Historic Run Across Africa

Date:

In an extraordinary feat of endurance and determination, British ultramarathon runner Russ Cook, known as the "Hardest Geezer," has made history by becoming the first person to run the entire length of Africa. This monumental journey, known as Project Africa, spanned nearly 9,000 miles and took him across 16 African countries, from the southern tip of South Africa to Bizerte, Tunisia.

Cook, a 27-year-old endurance athlete from Worthing, southern England, embarked on this ambitious journey on April 22, 2023. Despite facing numerous obstacles, including visa complications, health scares, and an armed robbery, Cook's resolve remained unshaken. "The last 347 days running through Africa have no doubt been the toughest of my life, but such an immense honour," Cook shared on Twitter, five days before his expected finish on April 7.

The journey was not without its trials. Cook and his team were victims of a gunpoint robbery in Angola, where they lost money, passports, and equipment. In Nigeria, he was temporarily halted by back pain. His journey was almost thwarted by the lack of a visa to enter Algeria, but diplomatic intervention from the Algerian embassy in Britain secured the required documents.

Cook's passion for extreme running was ignited by a friend. Since then, he has undertaken challenges like running across Asia and even a beer-fueled marathon. But Project Africa was not just about personal achievement. Cook used the challenge to raise funds for The Running Charity and Sandblast, two organizations that work with homeless young people and displaced people from Western Sahara, respectively. The challenge has raised over £690,000 (approximately $870,000) so far.

The final leg of Cook's journey was met with cheers from dozens of supporters who had gathered on a rocky outcrop beside the Mediterranean in northern Tunisia. Despite the physical toll, Cook remained upbeat. "My body is in a lot of pain. But one more day, I’m not about to complain," he told Sky News.

Reflecting on his journey, Cook said, "We have met incredible people in every single country we’ve been to that have welcomed us with love & kindness. The human spirit is a beautiful thing." His journey, marked by both hardship and triumph, serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the potential for extraordinary achievement.
