The Golden State Valkyries, the first Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) expansion team since 2008, has revealed its brand identity, marking a significant milestone in the team's journey. The team's name, logo, and colors were unveiled on Tuesday, symbolizing a new era for women's basketball in the Bay Area.
The Valkyries, an affiliate of the seven-time NBA Champion Golden State Warriors, have chosen a name steeped in Norse mythology. "Valkyries are a host of warrior women who are fearless and unwavering – flying through air and sea alike," the team explained in a statement. This moniker is a modern interpretation of these mythical figures, embodying strength, boldness, and fierceness.
The team's President, Jess Smith, expressed her excitement about the new identity. "The story of the Golden State Valkyries begins now," she said. "And what better way than to be surrounded and supported by Bay Area legends as we take our rightful place in the WNBA and beyond. This is the Bay’s time to show what’s possible with the best fans in the world."
The Valkyries' brand identity was developed through a rigorous process that involved extensive fan input. "Communities own sports teams, so it’s only fitting that as we embarked on the brand identity development process, we really listened to the fans and selected a name that they wanted," said Amanda Chin, Warriors Senior Vice President of Marketing.
The logo's design is rich in symbolism. The outer shape forms a V, reinforcing the team's name and symbolizing unity. The Bay Bridge is depicted to emphasize the team's connection to both Oakland and San Francisco. The bridge tower doubles as a sword—a symbol of courage, power, and authority—while the bridge cables form wings, a nod to the Valkyries of Norse mythology. The color scheme features Valkyrie Violet, a hue that symbolizes power, ambition, nobility, and women's empowerment.
The Valkyries are set to begin play in the 2025 WNBA season at Chase Center, and the team has already surpassed 7,500 season ticket deposits for its inaugural season. A Valkyries Block Party is scheduled for this Saturday at Thrive City, featuring appearances and performances from iconic Bay Area artists.
