Adam Montgomery, the New Hampshire man convicted of murdering his 5-year-old daughter Harmony, was sentenced to a minimum of 56 years in prison on Thursday. The sentence, which will be served consecutively with a 32 1/2-year sentence Montgomery is currently serving on unrelated gun charges, makes it unlikely that he will ever be released from prison.
Harmony Montgomery's tragic case, which exposed weaknesses in child protection systems and provoked calls for prioritizing the well-being of children over parents in custody matters, has been a source of public outrage and sorrow. Despite extensive searches, Harmony's body has yet to be found.
The case began in 2019 when Harmony was reported missing, nearly two years after authorities believe she was killed. The investigation led to the arrest of her father, Adam Montgomery, in 2022. He was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder, second-degree assault, witness tampering, abuse of a corpse, and falsifying evidence in February 2024.
During the trial, Montgomery's estranged wife, Kayla Montgomery, provided chilling testimony detailing the circumstances of Harmony's death. She claimed that Adam Montgomery had repeatedly punched Harmony in the head out of anger over a bathroom accident in the car. The child's body was then hidden in various locations, including a car trunk, a cooler, a ceiling vent, and a workplace freezer.
Despite the gruesome testimony, Adam Montgomery maintained his innocence on the murder charge. His defense team suggested that Kayla Montgomery continued to lie to protect herself, arguing that she was the last person to see Harmony alive.
Harmony's mother, Crystal Sorey, who had lost contact with her daughter after Adam Montgomery gained sole custody, expressed her grief and anger during the trial. "It was really hard for me," she said. "I think most of my tears were out of anger, out of anger, you know? Because there is no excuse in this world."
