In a shocking revelation, a 10-year-old boy from Texas has confessed to the 2022 murder of a man, according to the Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office. The boy admitted to using his grandfather's firearm to fatally shoot a sleeping man, Brandon O’Quinn Rasberry, 32, at an RV park in Nixon, Texas.
The cold case of Rasberry's death, who was shot once in the head in January 2022, was reignited following the boy's recent comments about a man he had shot and killed two years ago. "All possible witnesses were spoken to and interviewed by investigators during the investigation and all leads were exhausted," the sheriff’s office stated in a news release.
The confession came to light when the boy, an elementary school student, threatened to assault and kill another student on a school bus. This prompted a threat assessment by the school authorities, during which the boy made comments about shooting and killing a man two years ago. The school district officials relayed this information to the responding deputy.
Based on the child's comments, Gonzales County’s criminal investigators determined that he may have knowledge about Rasberry’s death. In a letter addressed to parents, the school district’s superintendent, Jeff Van Auken, confirmed that the child would not be returning to the school.
During a forensic interview at a child advocacy center, the child provided information consistent with first-hand knowledge of Rasberry's homicide. The boy stated that he had visited his grandfather, who lived in the same RV park as Rasberry, on January 16, 2022. He found a pistol in the glove box of his grandfather's truck, entered Rasberry's RV, and shot the sleeping man once in the head. The boy also admitted to discharging the firearm another time into the couch inside the RV before returning the firearm to the truck's glove box.
The firearm used in the crime was later found at a pawn shop in Seguin, Texas. A forensic analysis confirmed that the pawned gun was the same firearm used to kill Rasberry.
Due to the severity of the crime and concerns for the child's mental wellbeing, he was placed on a 72-hour emergency detention and taken to a psychiatric hospital in San Antonio, Texas, for evaluation and treatment. He was later booked on charges related to the school bus incident for making a terroristic threat.
